What is Ascended Heroes, and why does it match MEGA Dream ex?

Ascended Heroes is the English expansion released on January 30, 2026, led by Mega Gengar ex, Pikachu ex and Mega Dragonite ex. Japan got those cards first in High Class Pack "MEGA Dream ex" (MEGAドリームex).

Japanese vs English: what's actually different

Price

There's no English booster box, so a sealed Japanese box is the only way to buy a full box of these cards. As of Oct 13, 2026, a Japanese MEGA Dream ex box was $85.55 on TCGplayer, and an English Ascended Heroes Elite Trainer Box was $145.44.

Set size

Ascended Heroes is bigger, so English packs spread their pulls across more cards.

Card quality and packs

Many collectors like Japanese cards for their consistent cutting and centering, which matters if you plan to grade. Japan's Special Art Rare and Mega Ultra Rare line up with English Special Illustration Rare and Mega Hyper Rare. See Japanese rarity codes explained.

Playability

Japanese cards aren't legal in most English-language tournaments. If you play competitively in English, Ascended Heroes is your set.

What's guaranteed in a Japanese box (and not in an English one)

Sealed Japanese boxes follow a strong pattern: 1 Mega Attack Rare, 1 Super Rare or better, 1 Item Super Rare and 3 Art Rares, with at least 1 ex in every pack. It applies to factory-sealed full boxes only. Loose packs and resealed boxes don't follow it, and it isn't an official promise: The Pokémon Company prints only the box setup and that cards are inserted randomly. A Special Art Rare turns up in about 4 boxes in 10. English Ascended Heroes has no booster box, so there's no box guarantee. Every English pack is random. More in Japanese vs English booster box guaranteed pulls.
